The Lost Town of Africville (via Beyond Victoriana)

The internet is falling all over itself giving me cool local stuff to blog about lately! I really enjoyed this blog post from “Beyond Victoriana” about Africville. Every February, we hear about Africville as part of Black History Month programming in HRM but in recent years, we’ve been seeing a lot of interviews with “the Hermit of Africville” Eddie Carvery and other similar stories year-round. Over in the coments, Renee from Womanist Musings is right- in Canada we make a big hairy deal about American slaves fleeing slavery to the safety of Canada but things simply aren’t that clearcut. I’ve really enjoyed reading Beyond Victoriana, I’m really intrigued by Steampunk and multiculturalism. Anyhow, if you’re a Nova Scotian Steampunk, definitely hit the link and go check out the post about Africville. If you’re not a Nova Scotian you should still go read- what happened in Africville is an important part of history.
